5 Steps to EV Ready

An optimal EV charging solution for large strata buildings would typically involve familiarising oneself with the following steps:

01

Contact an energy auditor or VeCharge to obtain a building assessment in order to identify:

  • Building's electrical capacity

  • Power analysis of building's energy usage

  • Parking facilities

  • Regulatory requirements.

This assessment will help determine the most suitable EV charging equipment, the optimal locations for installation and any necessary upgrades to the electrical system.

Use NSW EV charging template letter to help you obtain quotes for an assessment.

02

INFRASTRUCTURE
STRATEGY

Once the assessment is complete, determine the most suitable EV charging strategy for your building.

There are several different strategies you can choose from, depending on your building's electrical infrastructure, budget, and expected demand for EV charging.

See here for more detailed information

03

PAYMENT
OPTIONS

Residential buildings have two EV charging cost recovery options:

  • Usage billing (kWh based) and

  • Cost recovery of strata-provided infrastructure.

There are many software options one can choose from (see our products section).

Owners and the owners corporation must agree on these options and include them in the EV charging by-law.

04

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Energy management in a building involves monitoring and managing the energy usage of the EV charging structure in order to avoid overloading.

To manage energy usage building managers can use:

  • Scheduling and control systems (ie off-peak hours)

  • Load Management strategies.

It is imperative to ensure the infrastructure is operating efficiently and cost-effectively (see our DLM section).

05

INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

Engaging a qualified and experienced  electrician is imperative as they will carry out the installation in compliance with all relevant laws, regulations and safety standards.

After the installation is complete, the owners corporation will need to develop and implement an EV charging policy to manage the use of the charging infrastructure. This may include setting usage fees, establishing booking and scheduling systems, and ensuring that the infrastructure is maintained and serviced regularly.
